Ta Alania on 23/11/2007 at the folk in the fire palace in Bad Honnef

Greek Rembeteko was announced. Without an inkling of what that is, but curious as it sounds, I directed my steps again to the fire palace. Eight musicians were started or had sat down to close my gap in education, and not only mine, because the foyer was proppevoll, but not a few seemed not to have this gap, but knew what to expect. But before expected Jutta Mensing, the main organizer and presenter of the FiF a surprise. The mayor of Bad Honnef had entered the show in its calendar service, praised in a Grüßwort the FiF and especially Jutta's commitment to the culture of the town and handed her an award, therefore, when I saw it right, the honorary citizenship. I congratulate! From the perspective of the audience were seated from left to right there::

But now to the musicians Luc Rosa (guitar, vocals), Gary Schneider (guitar, vocals), Margaret Schiel (Double bass, they had to stand and did the angle behind the two guitarists), Stavros Drechos (vocals, drums), Achim Schiel (bouzouki, vocals), Kerstin Schiel (vocals, accordion, clarinet), Dunya to mills (baglamas, vocals) and Ralf Krüger (Ud, baglamas, mandolin). Where was the verantworltliche for technology Rolf Schiel, I did not take with.

Yes, and what they offered for a musical? The two main singers were Drechos Stavros (the only Greek in the combo) and Kerstin Schiel (which, as I was told then, not a Greek speaking, but so perfect singing, which she addressed to gigs sometimes by Greeks in Greek will). They sang songs alternately, the contents of Gary Schneider said shortly before each. There were the usual make up some funny, some serious issues, the real folk music: love, poverty, trouble with the authorities, happy boozing and so on. I came first but the melodies remain quite monotonous, and some reminded me of Russian songs. Achim squint on his long-necked bouzouki played around this delicate melodies, and that was for my ears at first, the only interesting as melody and rhythm lulls me rather than my increased attention, and the lyrics I did not understand, yes. So I was admittedly in the first half of the concert a bit bored there. But after the break - it was up to the Greek wine, of which I had been drinking in the break, it was the habit, or was it the music itself, which is otherwise offered? - However, at least I heard very different or much more: There still was the song melodies, but they were alternating, there was further the delicate and complexity increasing Buzúkispiel, there were the oud, mandolin and baglamas (Buzúkis in Jackentaschenfoirmat developed one day in order to hide it quickly before the police can, and I do not know why that was necessary) supported this surrounding and sometimes with other voices, and there were the two guitars and bass, who formed a rhythm section. And these three levels have become increasingly complex, I swichte between them always around and could not ultimately get enough. It sounded even Ottoman-oriental klezmer-plays jazzy, sometimes Balkan and yet it was all Greek and Turkish-Greek prior to the forcible separation of the two peoples in the 1920s. That was just great music, and as I was then told the second half of the pieces were actually more complex, it was not just my imagination, or the wine.

Achim Schiel told me also that they play a lot before the Greek public oriental, while at That night was very European. One woman said that the announcements were pleasing been brief, it should be that more time was for the music, than with some other bands, and Achim said that was so common in Greece, where you just play without anything to explain. And he said the "bouzouki" in Greek is a neutral word, making it the "bouzouki" is not "the bouzouki," as they usually say. Well, if I can because our Irish folk musicians of convincing to say from now on "the bouzouki? The musicians of the evening, a Greek, a Frenchman, six German live incidentally scattered between Mainz and Düren, provided I got that right.

About this informative interview, I missed the train at 23.14 clock at three minutes and took the half hour wait, while I went to a manger in the Rhine, beyond me, the full moon, upstream from the lights of Upper Winter, down the river from Bonn, diagonally behind me illuminated Drachenfels ruins, and some played on the Tin Whistle. I'm telling you, this is even more beautiful than on a stage or at a session when the Rhine waves in the game with the mood and listen to an only mermaids and Father Rhine himself. I almost missed it too the track to clock 23.44.

CD Review: Planxties & Airs. Portrait

Planxties & Airs. Portrait

Irish duet from small and large pipes

Does anyone have the TV series "Silas," which ran in 1981 as a six-splitter Christmas with the twelve-year-old Patrick Bach in the lead role? Silas is a bushed circus boy who earns his living with the fact that he breaks down on the back of his horse tricks while playing flute. He knows his instrument so that he even softened a runaway circus bear with it. One day he is in the big church in the big city and look up full of awe at the organ pipes and says appreciatively to the organist ". You have but many flutes" Unfortunately, it does not come up with an interplay of the piccolo and the organist, but who wants to imagine how that might sound like, listen to that contained in this CD of Claus von Ulrike and white from Dusseldorf, which are otherwise particularly through its English folk band known Morris Open. Except

Silas on I immediately thought of the traditional in Brittany combination of organ and Bombarde. But here is not about Brittany, but Irish music to jigs to airs and so much pace in between. Claus playing tin whistles and low whistles and Ulrike Weimbs the organ at Christ Church in Brühl. Sometimes he plays a tune and she accompanied him with chords, just as one often knows of keyboards, but then she takes over the organ, the melody, and this is really a very unusual sound experience, a jig to listen to a church organ. Unusually, but appropriately, even if one is to imagine the poor turn out dancing dancer in a European church, but not why. In African The church is, after all, too.

the eleven tracks of the CD is "I Have a Wife of my Own" my favorite, and not just because I always Tom Can maker Vertex Tung on the sailing boat in the front garden in the back of my head, but because this tune here arranged so masterfully is that I like to hear it over and over again. The organ begins with gently chords, then begins to play the first part, the actual melody, the whistle the second part, then assumes the latter two parts, the organ chordally behind it, but then she takes over again, but first a jazzy to church music similar-sounding Intermezzo, which then turns into the actual melody, to them but to alienate over again, until finally the whistle goes back to the traditional melody.

But otherwise, this CD is a treat and I'm really sad to have missed the concert in Beuel, because we already were doing something else. Almost half of the pieces is written by Claus himself, the others are traditional songs or those of O'Carolan. Conclusion: An original idea implemented brilliant! I think this is really a special distinction Blein!

list of the pieces:

1) The Lilting Banshee / The Blarney Pilgrim / The Lilting Fisherman (Traditional)
2) Hedgehog's Lament (Claus von White)
3) I Have A Wife of My Own (Traditional)
4) Sheebeg And Seemore / Lord Inchiquni (Turlough O'Carolan)
5) Abbotts Bromley Horn Dance Snakes / And Ladders / Banish Misfortune / Sir Doby's Jig (trad. / Claus of white / trad / by Claus White)
6) The Green Man (Claus von White)
7) Daylight Fading / The Kid On The Mountain / Morrison's Jig (Claus of white / trad / trad) 8:00
.) Love Lie Beside Me (trad)
9) The Friar's Breeches (traditional)
10th) Hornpepi's Farewell (Claus 11th of white)
) The Priimrose Lass / The Morning Star / Father Kely's (trad)

Severe Macaw Disposition

Dan on 09/11/2007 in Bungersthof in Königswinter-Oberdollendorf

Dan on 11/09/2007 in Bungersthof in Königswinter-Oberdollendorf

When Dan are close, then I have to go, even if I had really no time. From this combination of Joergen W. Lang with his tuned to DADGAD guitar, his low whistle, and his vocal chords and this time with one (or, as I learned recently, as the Greek word is neuter) Bouzouki, Franziska Urton with their Fiddle and John Mayr with his accordion and the big bass I'm always so blown away, everything I need to write not really, it sounds more like an advertisement, as such a review. But should I pull for the criticism from the nose, but just when I'm just thrilled? Perhaps we should write the recurrence Petra, for her, the music of Dan (in part) to melancholy. But that is what I love so much, that depth, this breadth, this longing, so appropriate to secluded shores, meadows, marshes, as they are so typical of Ireland and Scotland. And yet the music of Dan is anything but stereotypical arrested, no, she thrives on originality in the arrangement and her repertoire is not one that one of the many other Irish folk band knows. Sure, there are so well-known pieces of it, but just somewhere excavated or even write yourself or there are influences from continental Europe Balfolk and drone-folk music, or generally available. And then there are the arrangements that contain so many subtleties that I discover in part until the third or fourth listen to a piece, for example, two melodies simultaneously running against each other, and wherein once the flute, the one and fiddle and accordion, the other play and then take turns, notably in "Hares on the Mountain," in which only the actual melody still played on "How beautiful are the May flowers." New at this concert was an even greater use of vocal harmonies and lots by John Frank, and that nearly unplugged was played and sung. Only Joergens guitar was plugged in, otherwise everything was purely acoustically. And new is that Joergen now lives in Alsace as a tenant of none other than Rudiger Oppermann. Well, that kind of landlord certainly expect a lot of inspiration, their fruits you will in future concerts and CDs to listen. It will be interesting.

pity that not too much audience was there. The guest room was halved in his version though well cast, but only in the halved. But on the other hand, it was still comfortable and the only way os the unamplified concert possible. The familial character of the concert, but - as has been brought to me - did not all equally good. On our next table was gemosert: Yes We are here on a family reunion? Why do we pay for admission? "Which, according to a friend who was with us there, it was that the musicians, the concert started not on time and dragged the break with a friendly conversation for too long. The missing have had over the audience with a professional attention. Well, that was not me on that, but I was asked to give to the next, and do it. Who can already do all right? The same friend also said that she had particularly enjoyed the harmonious interplay of Frank and John. It should be seen but even if musicians are on stage together to understand so well. Jou, dat is et. Moreover

was told that Dan did not pronounce "Dan", but "Don", ie with such an open o, as in the Swedish a with a squiggle over it. Ha, that was then in the circus tent is not the North German Slang by Jen Come on Nick, but it was the correct pronunciation.

Basketball Famous Artwork

sounds festival, 8.11.2007 in the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn

sounds festival, 8.11.2007 in the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn

My third
sounds festival, I witnessed in the two years in the KAH in Bonn, also called "Exhibition Hall" is named. Rüdiger Oppermann, however, it was the 21 Tour, where once again offered to German ears unheard and unfamiliar, even to the ears of a TFF-folkies and enthusiastic visitor.

Yes, the beginning was not so exotic, unless you already fremdelt the sound of a bagpipe and drum. Equipped with same instruments rose Rüdiger Oppermann and Bijan Mahjub (yes, our Bijan from Cologne, the musician) down the stairs right through the audience. Bijan played an Iranian bagpipe henceforth no longer apply came, and Rüdiger a drum. That sounded oriental and medieval, thus quite usual for a regular visitor to the medieval market at Christmas time in Siegburg and from time to time similar events here and there. In the course of the concert held Rüdiger Oppermann on his two harps on stage waiting for him, which he again drew Celtic and Celtic but not documentation, combined with all sorts of electronic amplification as echoes, loops and the like. Bijan attacked the other hand, the Bombarde, and that he was so loud that you would have heard an unamplified harp is no longer anyway. As it was, offered both in Brittany native instruments under the title "Far West" is a wistful contrast harmony. As the Atlantic waves rushing against the cliffs, with only gentle breezes swept over the meadows.

went from west to east, then and in a very very unusual way. Three men and a lady from Korea, Kim Juhong, Cho Wonil, Lee Howon and (exceptionally Ladies last) Oh Hyunyu offered as an ensemble Samulon Noreumachi on various drums and gongs (Kwänggari, Tschanggo, Buk and Jing called) a percussion storm without equal . It was like spontaneous, but was rehearsed to the last handle in Korea and one in the nation so widespread tradition in this country as the brass bands. We stayed in the Far East with Hong Yu Chen, a petite Chinese girl from Nanjing, who played an equally delicate instrument, a Guqin, a classic fingerboard zither, played for 2500 years and actually occurs in at least nearly as old instruments. It sounded so beautiful Chinese, that one may wish that the Chinese were also generally in politics and business so sensitive in this music. And what a contrast to the Koreans, at least to the drummers of the evening!

Although the Koreans and the Chinese traditional, fixed arrangement played, they could still do with improvising the Westerners together. The Westerners, with which it showed the first drummer was, for our language an Oriental, namely Houssaine Kili from Morocco. Yes, that's funny that we are part of the Orient Morocco, even though it belongs to the Maghreb, just to the west. He sang and played his Guimbri, a very archaic-looking plucked from a fur-covered wooden box, first alone a song from his Gnawa tradition, but he was then accompanied by the Koreans. And it fitted like Chinese tea Moroccan Mint: Wonderful!

So it went throughout the evening continued in different interplay between the Atlantic and Pacific, bombastic and very tender alternated. Very interesting was the game at three or scarf my schalmeiähnlichen instruments Breton, Korean and Chinese Origin, presented by Bijan, Oh Hyunyu and Hong Yu Chen, which showed how similar these different cultures, but sometimes are. The Silk Road would approve. In the end we went to the Rhine plains, no, not in the Cologne bay, but to Alsace, the Bijan has dedicated a piece, "Les Vagues d'Alsace", the "waves of Alsace," by which he meant the wine lined hills.

As I was reading Bijan only in the first half of this tour, the second in his place Enkh Jargal, so Epi, the Mongol. As much as I hear Epi, I'm glad to have experienced here with Bijan, otherwise the east would be something been over-represented. And besides, I like the sound of bombards and shawm so much! (As I learned in the meantime, I will be in Jena, when there Epi is part of it, and I will take the opportunity there to listen to it inside.)

Oh, Bijan asked me to write that opening the doors at the beginning of the addition of the musicians was very uncomfortable because they had seen this from the stage to open the doors and unrest had come into the audience.

And can not I must mention that even John and Ingrid Mayr Mayr-Feiler (Dán, People Mayr and others) in the audience stayed and enjoyed the music too.

My third
sounds festival, I witnessed in the two years in the KAH in Bonn, also called "Exhibition Hall" is named.

What Different Existentialism And Perennialism

Concert Review: Jake Walton & Eric Liorzou on 11/04/2007 at the folk in the fire palace in Bad Honnef

Jake Walton & Eric Liorzou on 11/04/2007 at folk in the fire palace in Bad Honnef

This time I arrived only 15 minutes late in Bad Honnef, there are no train had been canceled, was even time for the start of the concert in the fire palace, and so everything was in balance.

When I many years ago (1992) of the hurdy-gurdy player Konstanze Kulinsky suggested that their hurdy-gurdy to play sometimes at the Irish session at Boulanger in Tübingen, they thought it was impossible, but the hurdy-gurdy not fit for Irish music. The year before, ie 1991, I had heard on the Irish Folk Festival in Koblenz, Jake Walter, who proved yet know that it still fit. But yes, the music he plays is not a music session, at least not how you play it as normal to Irish sessions.

Now after 16 years I heard him, then a second time, while in the company of Eric Liorzou. Jake comes from Cornwall, Eric from Brittany, consisting of two closely related ethnic regions are separated by the North Sea from each other. And while not in Cornwall Celtic language is more talking, Breton still alive when it would have almost shared the fate of the Cornish. And now they sat as seen in the foyer of the fire castle, Eric of us from left, Jake right, the former with two guitars, including one ten-stringed unique, he imagined, but as mandola with the proper name Nelson, and secondly with a guitar and just said hurdy equipped. Jake was also his vocal cords not only for the announcements and jokes about the hurdy gurdy on (What's the difference between a hurdy-gurdy and a trampoline? If you jump on the trampoline, we shall first of the shoes.) But also to sing, and Although mainly own songs, but also that of William Butler Yeats, Donevan and other, mostly with content, which concerned the nature, the seasons, the West Wind and more or less spiritual references to nature was. I so completely understand the lyrics, but rather would read it again. Accompanied by either both with their guitars or Jake with the hurdy-gurdy, which he used it very sparingly. The melodies seemed to quite elegiac, dreamy.

it went faster in the pure instrumental to the point, especially when combinations of Mandola and hurdy-gurdy. Yes, they were not jigs and reels, but rather Bourees and other French dance melodies, even something in Siebenertakt, including waltz time, but also one or the other Insular Celtic was there. He was able to buzz too, and the Mandola fit with her very very hard to sound very good. It went off right!

Thus, the time was a very special concert at the palace fire, as you would only get once every few years to hear, if at all. As Jake said: He admired the audience, listening as attentively songs that have never heard before and probably never will hear. But then again I had to wait half an hour on the track, and used the time to a crib, then a breakwater in the Rhine to go. The water mirrored the reflection of lights from Bonn in the clouds, gently slid a freighter downstream, while a slipcase for the ride up more work, but had harmoniously fit into this nocturnal mood flow into it. The fit to the music of the two Celts, who echoed this way in me.

"Woltähr" is both the nickname and stage name of Walter Schmitt songs from Trier and the name of his band, which now presents its sixth regular CD since 1992. The first CD was in Wremen in Bremen German-based Irish Irish folk trio "made Irish folk music CD in Germany" as the first in Folker! (06.04) chosen as special, and this second you stand in for anything, except that is not sung in Latin. As the first special is expected in the second before, and yes, you can access without fear. There are six instrumentals of the genera Jig, Reel, Polka, Hornpipe, Waltz and Slow Air and seven songs in English or Gaelic, each with a prime tool in monitoring and sophisticated arrangements. Both the vocal, and instrumental polyphony gets under your skin, creating a soothing showers throughout the body. Special mention also of the harmony and the vocal harmonies, and the cello! The music is in fine detail so different than many imagine to Irish folk, and yet it is perfectly in this genre is, therefore, no world music fusion. Responsible for this masterpiece are Siobhán Kennedy (vocals, flute, whistles, fiddle, concertina, quilting dance), Angela Berns (vocals, bodhrán, keyboards, piano, whistle, shaker) and Jens Come Nick (vocals, guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, viola , cello, bass uilleann, pipes, whistles, pioano).

in Folker! 05:06 discussed debut album of this Irish folk quintet from the Netherlands Wageningen was very good, and this second plant with six instrumentals (reels, jigs, waltzes) and songs I like even better. It includes a stirring, groovy, often jazzy sound, both in the fast, quiet and in the games. The latter are anything but boring, but tensions have melody and some two-part, which go really deep clean. Even so, some intro is before the increase in pace full of delicate tension that discharges into a raging, sometimes running, sometimes galloping crescendo as one would expect from the best bands in Ireland or the U.S., but the undoubted effort would be to hear out . Particularly enthusiastic I'm the banjo and the concertina, which form only the tip of the iceberg. In addition to traditional music (also a swedish) your own tunes and lyrics are available, including the brilliant "Kickin 'a Cuckoo" in 30s ragtime playing. The combo consists of Dominique Bentvelsen (double bass), Nineke Bijker (vocals, guitar, spoons), Sjoerd van Ravenzwaaji (banjo, guitar, vocals), Vincent Pompe van Meerdervoort (vocals, box, bodhrán, Tarabuka) and Mike Bruinsma (fiddle ).

Three men and a woman from Geroda in Franconia play eight instrumentals and sing three songs from Ireland in some pretty liquid, sometimes a little choppy gameplay. Their models Solas, Flook Beoga or they reach far yet, but especially flute, guitar and Bhodrán have to listen very beautiful.

AMA-Verlag, 2007; http://www.günter-hochguertel.de/ , http://www.wibbelstetz.de/
11 tracks, 44:59 by dt texts and information and photos

"Dance on the Volcano", the title fits Eifelrock and Wibbelstetz frontman Günter Hochgürtel as Maare in the Eifel, but no, this CD not songs contains north northern dialect, but eleven highly German songs. Already under the name "Troubadour" songs he was from outside the genre Wibbelsetz the best, including, but not only their own seals. But now he has written songs recorded Eleven, where he helped a gang of friends who are working together a full band sound, including even Jürgen Eder Scholars and Linus and John Kramer of Wibbelstetz Epremian Le Clou, but other, previously unknown to me. It sounds like Rhenish folk music to Cajun and country, to rock and pop, to jazz, to songs, even after hit, but not too much, as Gunter's voice is really good ingebettet and worn. And his lyrics are about human carelessness in dealing with nature (that is the content of the title song and just dance on the volcano), the devious brother, of the suddenly grown-up daughter, the parents' home towards Kappstadt leaves the fate of a prostitute, a grandfather inherited from the cigarette case and in many ways of pleasure and woe of the relations between men and women. All this is so peppy, dance or schunkelbar brought over, that you forget the seriousness of some texts sometimes. Apart from the Rhenish, French and American models Günters I come as a comparison musician John Denver and more Angelo Branduardi to mind. It is simply well-done art songwriter, not as cramped as some colleagues, the raised index finger is only the title song really much to notice, but each song has its own morality, which is placed discreetly over. The Who release party could not attend, as I did, which was established this CD to my heart.

Nipples Sucking By Lips

Concert Review: Pure Irish Drops on 09/10/2007 in the bread factory in Bonn-Beuel

Pure Irish Drops on 10/09/2007 in the bread factory in Bonn-Beuel

Traditional Music of South Ulster in concert atmosphere

were Unlike in the previous three years, the Irish pure drop this year not on 8, but on 9 October in Bonn. Pure Irish Drops, which always promises a concert of traditional music, mainly instrumental, with each year has a different focus. This year's focus is regional, namely music from the Ulster region, which is partly in Northern Ireland and partly in the Republic of Ireland is. Despite these three musicians were of the border this year's Tour is a common musical tradition that is much older than the division of the country.

They entered the stage one after another in a way that the first first solo, then played a duet with the second, then played the solo, which he played a duet with the third party, the dan again appeared as a soloist, and then only played all three together. The first was Martin Quinn, a young bush with two button accordion, a Hohner from Germany, which has already seen more than his players for decades, but that was probably due to play a little Swedish, so he spent most time on a diatonic accordion played, as is customary in France. He added, replacing Gerry O'Connor, who contented himself with a violin, from which he all but hand-picked out. The third and oldest in the league then Gabriel McArdle, both a concertina, so the accordion, played and sang. And what they played and sang? There were jigs, reels, slip jigs, slides, polkas, airs and ballads sung, that is what is commonly of an Irish folk and Irish Traditional Concert expected, but so pure, so pure, so traditional, as it is rare today but heard and also in the repertoire Sun ulster-regional, that even I, who had heard many Irish, many of the tunes still do not know, although there were no new compositions, but of old traditional songs. Prince Florian, the organizers said, even it it was so given and other experienced musicians in the genre that they did not know that local music treasure, and were so surprised. One or the other but I was certainly known, but only little. Sure you can musical history find determines how old the pieces are, indeed, when the specific playing style was created, or, well, maybe but not because it is already operate field research, and must have the good fortune to meet with musicians, which can not only play and sing, but also the history of music . Know The three musicians on stage were able to say at least often, by whom the piece that they declared war just learned, but where the one who had it then?

The music of the evening you can hear in Ireland rather in private circles or in the pubs but the concert hall of the bread factory was ideally suited to her alone and concessive trated to hear. Does not fit the music was safe for people who like modern. One could say that the Paper Boys play at one end and the three musicians of this evening at two ends of a scale, which does not mean that they could not be otherwise. As much as I love modern, experimental ways of playing, so I enjoy these old music which themselves anything but earthy in the sense of crude and unsophisticated was. She was very delicate, very playful, albeit rather than polyphonic unison. The ballads zumeinst also followed a particular pattern of melody and beat, one was a singing of the jig. Without musicians such as these and without this, they bring on tour and on the stages of the world, Irish folk would get lost and lose its roots. listen to such a concert and myself as a musician to play such music in such a session, again grounded all the modern musician and mulitkultibeeinflussten. Folk music is the matter of survival, they will be folk music. Apart from such theoretical considerations was the concert was simply a treat, at least for me, but also for Ferdinand, who was with me there, Sabrina (violinist at Whisht!), Jonathan (Geiger offer Five Alive Oh) and Winnie (Concertinaspieler in the Fiddler's session), the also there were, and the applause to follow other well for the audience.

The restaurant in the bakery by the way new tenant who operated the now former UN cafeteria. The new place value to regional and organic products, so that for example, they now Neumarkter Lammbräu (not regional, but organic), and as before Malzmühle Kölsch (not organic, but local) on tap and gaff (ditto) and Heller Kölsch (ecological and regional) of the bottle, and Rothaus Tanenzäpfe (not yet). Sorry, but I was so not the Russian Baltika Stout, on which I had been looking forward and not a Polish Zyviec.
