7th Bonner Irish Folk Festival on 04/26/2008 in harmony in Bonn-Endenich

Even at the 2 BIFF they were here, but have since changed personnel and developed. The Amsterdam Stargazer quartet, consisting of Stijn van Beek (Uilleann pipes, whistles), Anneke Eijkelboom (fiddle, bass fiddle), Kaspar Laval (bouzouki) (the three were already at the 4th Kill BIFF 2005 with the band since Goose here) and Janos Koolen (mandolin, guitar), was not better (nor worse) than Dan, but different, and in turn so different and not. Anders, was that they played only instrumental, and that they almost only high speed, played quirrlig to the stop, was similar to that was also heard here, an influence of continental European drone music and many other folk music, from the Balkans, Galicia (the Uilleann Piles heard at once like a Gaida), from Brittany , also on the Jazz. Does anybody knows the Dutch folk band Flairck from the 1970s and 80s? To my ears, similarities could be heard, and in what ways as leg flow curves the Amsterdam session scene flow, I know happy times. was then still the Festival session with all musicians (in) the evening including Sabrina on stage, and this was again a treat in itself. In the ensuing free after that session in the Fiddlers I unfortunately was not there, but John Mayr said that had gone a long time.

This festival again proved one thing: folk music is anything but old-fashioned tradition of care or house music for musicians who otherwise could, but folk can be avant-garde, cutting-edge music, full of artistic creativity and craft mastery, and thus help but rooted in musical traditions that date back centuries. And it shows one thing: to be part of that mix of tradition and innovation is not only "real" Ireland, or otherwise "real" members of the nations, from where the traditions are rooted, but anyone who can enter feel in the music . Hip music genes can be international or multicultural, human level.

Sadly as the not so comfortable seat I was on the contribution of the duo White Canvas, consisting of Rena Meyer and Rolf Weil Beydemüller was already almost too late when we arrived. Rolf played guitar, sang, Rena. This was indeed not folk music, but rather something that every right can be described as "art music". Rolf played very delicate, very Rena sang ..., let's say mystical. Between alto and soprano alternating with very unusual melody guides the user rather than English and I do not know what, probably a fantasy language or no, her voice as an instrument used. So you need to rest.

Michael Busch from Speyer was by this time after the first two breaks in the series. He was limited to playing the guitar, and he delivered more art than folk music. Most likely still be among the game reminded me Folkies Olaf Sickmann, and like this it was also Michael particular impressions of the trip that inspired him to his compositions, notably those from Celtic lands, but also from Sweden or elsewhere. A piece was inspired by the novel "Stone and the Flute" by Hans Bemmann although Michael has played no flute. And as with Olaf came to the listener (ie me) do not necessarily reflect the associations that the composer came when composing, but that's probably the problem with any instrumental music program. Anyway, it was a very fine and delicate music that invited you to dream.

entered after the second break again a duo on stage: Dylan Fowler & Gillian Stevens from Wales. Dylan acted as a guitar, bouzouki (or was it a mandola?), Tin and low whistle player, Gillian served a violin and Crwth one, a kind of medieval violin from Wales, in the appearance of a lyre similar to the sound of a keyed fiddle. In addition, both sang well, and in this way, they offered a music between the Middle Ages, Renaissance and New Age, along with welsh bard song on which Michael had had Klevenhaus his joy. Gillian way, is the aunt of a fellow student of mine whom I met on the night there. So small is the world!

As befits a festival evening, there was a session at the end of all the musicians involved (in) at once. This was really a spontaneous, improvised jam session that would have been enough for an evening of jazz honor. Rena stayed in singing hands behind the ears to hear the sound of her voice better, so it almost looked like a muezzin (Muslim prayer callers). Although we were too late, we had noticed almost three hours of music. Not everything we liked equally well, but some excellent. Jutta Mensing announced, probably frequently times to organize such a festival evening, with two or three gigs one after another. They should do it!
