7th Bonner Irish Folk Festival on 04/26/2008 in harmony in Bonn-Endenich
for the BIFF has therefore the seventh year started, and I hope very much that it is not a darn, but that will be the moderator Näx (Alexander May) reached No. 10 prospect asked too.
This time, three bands were back on the stage of full-bodied harmony, one from Bonn and its surroundings, namely, tj: unichtgut, Second Dan, the next band member after all, lives only 50 miles away, namely Johannes Mayr Breitscheid residing in the Westerwald, and the third band for the second time in the Netherlands, the Stargazer from Amsterdam, which in a broader sense also belongs to the Rhineland.
The band with the nice play on words "tune" and "good for nothing" thus began the evening, so after his Näx Moderation was able to remain on stage, namely, as he himself belongs to this band. Even at the 2 BIFF they were here, but have since changed personnel and developed. Näx naturally played the Uilleann pipes, Irish elbow Sackpfiefe that he was a master, as well as tin and low Whislte what Piper often do, and even sang a song. The latter did Werner Nitsche, who formerly starred in Ben, crowns and otherwise accompanied the tunes of the band with the guitar. Even Nicole Maldonado was singing, and with her we can say this absolutely wonderful voice, she should even greater degree in the gigs of the band, so, should they advance to the vocal singer, which is also none other than music teacher Tom can make your suggested in my presence, which I do not have anything said against her violin. The second lady in the combo served a true Irish woman, though living in Dusseldorf, Helen McDevitt, awarded with the flute, whistles and concertina the band's sound a good kick. Then again, a gentleman, Ralph-Eric Berg, Although only a tool of the attendants, but a huge, namely a double bass. And last but not least completed a founding member Achim Weimer, who has designed the BIFF website, the bodhrán with his sextet. It was a pleasure to listen to the iguanas, even the songs of Näx and Werner, although Nicole's voice was even more beautiful. But they have some instrumental on the box. For example, there was a game in which the pipes Näx the melody, played the Helen and Nicole backed by a drone on Whislte and fiddle, which she then matched with the melody. Or since the beginning of reels, the Ralph-Eric Werner and was interrupted on bass and guitar with a groovy interlude from then an intro for a clock change from 16 / 8 9 / 8 (or so, at least 7 / 8) was that gave the reel a Balkan Touch, although the Irish Näx Balkanconnnection not so much holding.
entered after the starter and a short break only half as many musicians on stage, namely, Franziska Urton (pronounced "loci", although the name pronounced in German musician is a genius after all), Joergen W-Lang and Johannes Mayr. Only three people, but they had what it takes. But I have written so many reviews about them that I can be brief here (the older Rezis you find behind the links below). It is always a very special experience, listen to these three, Joergens vocals and guitar, bouzouki and whistles, Franzis violin and double bass John. They offer a contrasting harmony of deep-grooving, bubbly and then sweeping tones and rhythms, and it seemed to me that Jorgen and John's Hölderlin Express past in play from Dan even more noticeable, than before. I spoke weeks later in the fire palace with John about it and he also said HöEx and other non-Irish-Folk-projects from him and Jörgen, ie those of the continental European drone music, be it French, medieval, Balkan or modern Free-folk Music had, in any case an influence on the way to play Irish music.
I wondered why Sabrina Palm, and the BIFF-Team Dan in the middle and were not positioned as a crowning connection. The question was then on the band that this conclusion bilderte answered. The Amsterdam Stargazer quartet, consisting of Stijn van Beek (Uilleann pipes, whistles), Anneke Eijkelboom (fiddle, bass fiddle), Kaspar Laval (bouzouki) (the three were already at the 4th Kill BIFF 2005 with the band since Goose here) and Janos Koolen (mandolin, guitar), was not better (nor worse) than Dan, but different, and in turn so different and not. Anders, was that they played only instrumental, and that they almost only high speed, played quirrlig to the stop, was similar to that was also heard here, an influence of continental European drone music and many other folk music, from the Balkans, Galicia (the Uilleann Piles heard at once like a Gaida), from Brittany , also on the Jazz. And changed melody and accompanying instruments leading from one another, throwing the balls, knotted into one another, changed rhythms and keys, and I just stood there and tried to understand what was going on the stage. Does anybody knows the Dutch folk band Flairck from the 1970s and 80s? To my ears, similarities could be heard, and in what ways as leg flow curves the Amsterdam session scene flow, I know happy times. Dán any rate was in the middle well placed in the middle of the good heart of folk music. As usual, it
was then still the Festival session with all musicians (in) the evening including Sabrina on stage, and this was again a treat in itself. In the ensuing free after that session in the Fiddlers I unfortunately was not there, but John Mayr said that had gone a long time.
This festival again proved one thing: folk music is anything but old-fashioned tradition of care or house music for musicians who otherwise could, but folk can be avant-garde, cutting-edge music, full of artistic creativity and craft mastery, and thus help but rooted in musical traditions that date back centuries. And it shows one thing: to be part of that mix of tradition and innovation is not only "real" Ireland, or otherwise "real" members of the nations, from where the traditions are rooted, but anyone who can enter feel in the music . Hip music genes can be international or multicultural, human level.
